Papel Machete Receives Creative Capital Award

Papel Machete is one of 41 artists/collectives selected from a pool of ~4,000 for the Creative Capital Award! This award will support On The Eve of Abolition, a bilingual play in Spanish and English that tells the speculative fiction story of the last prison in the U.S. Using letters from incarcerated people, prison radio shows, puppets, masks, music, and picture storytelling, the play will present events preceding the final day of the last prison, and the movement which made abolition a reality. This project will engage several collaborators, including AgitArte, Southerners on New Ground (SONG) and Prison Radio.

After almost 14 years of creating radical and politically militant theater and puppetry, AgitArte is proud to congratulate our long-time collaborators and to continue supporting this important work through our Popular Education and Performance Program (the PEPP).
